In most cases when client’s expectations are high, the criteria for their food images is really based on their Corporate needs for packaging, editorial or advertising and their ‘Chefs’ best presentation of their food., then translated into the 'read' by the food stylist rebuild of the food, in collaboration with great lighting from the photographer. It goes into a package or add design, then printed and distributed to the public.
This means the food is either artfully placed on the plate, (advertising), or organically skewed about, (editorial).
It the client’s ‘signature products,’ captured & experienced food stylists are hired to recreate iconic images for them based on the prerequisites.
However, copying food and drinks can be daunting. It requires using composition and creativity to minimize bad features on a plate and enhance the best, without changing or altering the components.
An experienced Food Stylist will do this with technical understanding of food composition, the right tools, and patience. This often means presenting the food for the camera without making it look “too good to be true” while adhering to the proper proportions and overall look of the plate.
A great food stylist will adhere to their client’s food and drink style while helping them to brand images for advertising that accurately represent their offerings. Continuity of work is a key component in food styling as clients will tend to look to their food stylist for this kind of continuity during advertising campaigns.
